Verdict

MIDNIGHT COWBOY has shown enough promise in novice hurdles to suggest he could potentially be a fairly handicapped horse off a mark of 115 but he does need to bounce back from a poor effort at Uttoxeter where he stopped very quickly. Never Learn ran his best race over timber in what appeared a decent novice hurdle for the grade at Chepstow when third behind Copain De Classe and is entitled to improve on his handicap debut. Aliandy and Fair To Middling bring some recent form to the table and have to be respected too.

Verdict

ALIANDY defied market weakness and showed improved form in the process when opening his account at Southwell last month. He's still low mileage and with further improvement a distinct possibility he earns the vote to go in again. Midnight Cowboy was a bit disappointing on his final start in the spring, but holds sound claims on his previous exploits, whilst Fair To Middling is also considered.

SILENT STEPS makes her Rules debut for new connections, having last raced in a point-to-point when she beat dual novice hurdle winner Coillte Lass, and represents Chris Giles, who owned the winner of this contest two years ago in subsequent Grade 1 heroine Bitofapuzzle. He will be hoping this daughter of Milan can progress in the same manner. Star Rider was a solid performer on the Flat and looks a real threat with this stamina test likely to suit. Ellens Way showed ability when fifth at Warwick and looks best of the remainder.

Verdict

Hurdling newcomers SILENT STEPS and Star Rider arrive here via very different backgrounds but both appeal as useful prospects and are almost certainly the pair to focus on. The former had some decent sorts in behind when readily landing an Irish point in the spring and is narrowly preferred for the Nicky Henderson team.

SAINT RAPH found his last start at Cheltenham in November too hot to handle when pulled up behind What A Moment in the amateur riders' handicap chase, but he has his sights lowered here and will appreciate Paul O'Brien's 5lb claim. Cyclop bounced back with a solid third to Aerial in the Southern National and could well build on that, while Ardkilly Witness is banking on first-time blinkers to bring about plenty of improvement.

Verdict

CYCLOP proved all the better for his reappearance when an excellent third in the Southern National at Fontwell last month and has solid claims off the same mark. Heroes Or Ghosts was close to making a winning return at Uttoxeter and is next best ahead of Silver Commander.

AWESOME ROSIE has won and finished half-a-length second in two previous visits to this track and she looks sure to be in the thick of the action again. The five-year-old was a little disappointing on her handicap debut at Aintree in May, but Alan King has his horses in tremendous form and a seven-month break will have done her no harm whatsoever. On Demand remains in good form despite only managing fourth over half a mile further here last time and she shouldn't be far away. Sadma and Martabot are others to keep an eye on.

Verdict

An open heat in which it might be worth chancing AWESOME ROSIE on return for the in-form Alan King stable. She was better than the result on her handicap debut in the spring and looks fairly treated on the pick of her novice form. Que Sera was probably stretched by a longer trip on testing ground on her return and is respected for the Hobbs/Johnson combination. On Demand also makes the shortlist.

A return to chasing over a much more suitable distance could prove to be key for BROOME LANE, who looked in need of the run when making her seasonal reappearance for Tim Vaughan over the smaller obstacles at Chepstow in October. A rating of 92 might not prove beyond her and she can get the better of Tikkapick, who disappointed at Fontwell when making various mistakes after coming under pressure at an early stage. How's My Friend hasn't been seen under Rules since May 2014 and needs a market check.

Verdict

TIKKAPICK's jumping came under more scrutiny back in trip at Fontwell last month, but he has long shaped as though he has a bigger performance in him, and he looks the way to go back over a more suitable distance. Broome Lane and How's My Friend make most appeal of the remainder.

Copper Birch is on a roll and would be interesting if lining up here (engaged to run at Ffos Las on Wednesday) but preference is for HIGHBURY HIGH, who was in excellent form when last seen in the autumn for Neil Mulholland. His second at Fontwell last time out following a 6lb rise was impressive and he should be suited by these conditions. Ballycoe's winning run came to an end when he finished fourth at Bangor but that effort wasn't devoid of promise considering he had gone up a stone, while Like Sully looks best of the remainder.

Verdict

HIGHBURY HIGH has looked an improved performer returned to this sphere of late and remains on a fair mark following his good second at Fontwell in October, so just edges the vote over Copper Birch, who may find this one race too many if allowed to take up this engagement.

Verdict

Harry Fry, Alan King and Philip Hobbs have claimed this event in the last three years and all with useful types. Hobbs introduced the promising Rolling Dylan to land the spoils last season and VODKA ALL THE WAY could be another useful recruit to the Minehead yard. The son of Oscar cost 40,000 euros at the sales and could prove tough to beat. Fry's winning pointer An Siltean looks to be the main danger, while any money for Stealing Mix would be worth noting.

Verdict

The market should reveal plenty of clues but expensive point-winner AN SILTEAN arguably makes the most appeal on paper. Kayf Mariner, Vodka All The Way and Cresswell Legend are others to consider.
