Winning pointer who shaped as if in need of stiffer test at Market Rasen so more than likely he'll be tapped for toe at this shorter trip.

Verdict

Nicky Henderson has a sublime record in this contest having won every renewal since 2008 with some smart prospects including Vaniteux in 2013 and O O Seven last year. He looks to continue that record this year with Bardd, who improved plenty from his debut when winning a decent bumper here last month and looks another potential smart type for the master of Seven Barrows. However this looks a strong enough contest on paper and preference is for CRUISEAWEIGH, a very impressive winner at Aintree in a bumper and the form of both his starts has worked out very well. Tom George has been blessed with some very nice bumper horses recently and this could prove to be the best of them. Crystal Lad merits a second look on his form with Khezerabad over C&D last time, while Dashing Oscar got his career back on track with a win at Bangor and looks to have more to offer.

Verdict

Hurdling-debutants CRUISEAWEIGH and Bardd have both achieved plenty in bumpers and represent excellent stables, so they're taken to get the better of those with experience, with the former marginally preferred. Crystal Lad shaped as if he'd come on for his second over C&D last time, so he's third on the list.

Has returned an improved mare this autumn, following up his Towcester win at Leicester a couple of days ago and looking sure to go well in her hat-trick bid if the race doesn't come too soon.

Verdict

MIDNIGHT SAPPHIRE was no match for the hugely impressive Lifeboat Mona at Ascot a fortnight ago but showed there that she is capable of landing a similar prize without a rival of that calibre in the field. Royal Debutante is a threat making her handicap debut with her form linking with Keep In Line on their Huntingdon effort, while Graceful Legend is very consistent and should give a decent account being 1lb lower than her last winning mark due to her rider's 7lb claim.

Verdict

ROYAL DEBUTANTE gets the marginal vote on account of the fact she's open to the most improvement, but this is a wide-open mares' handicap full of in-form sorts, so should provide a fascinating spectacle. Oskar's Eva and Midnight Sapphire both found one too good last time but still seem to be on the up, so they're worth considering, too.

Winning pointer who has shown fairly useful form over hurdles. Not disgraced on handicap debut at Chepstow (23.6f) last month, but current mark demands more.

Verdict

Fingal Bay would be very tough to beat on his best form but those days are behind him now and he has to concede plenty of weight to some progressive sorts here, including BLUE RAMBLER. The Ian Williams-trained six-year-old was an impressive winner when well backed at Wetherby in late October, this step up in trip could unlock further improvement and a 9lb rise may not prevent a follow up given how easily he won that day. Some Kinda Lama is another improver and is respected on his hat-trick bid.

Verdict

BLUE RAMBLER capitalised on what looked a feasible mark and landed a gamble in the process at Wetherby in October. He looks the type to follow up judged on that run and gets the nod to continue on his upward curve. Rainy City, on handicap debut, and Arctic Gold, with his reappearance under his belt, can also play a part.

Verdict

The Arkle is already shaping up to be one of the races of the Cheltenham Festival and the ante-post favourite ALTIOR looks to cement his position further at the head of the market and join the likes of Fondmort and Captain Conan as winners of this Grade 1 prize for Nicky Henderson. A horse who improved massively as the season progressed over hurdles in his novice campaign, the son of High Chaparral ended his season with a devastating performance in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival beating Min by seven lengths in a race that has worked out extremely well. Connections could easily have gone down the Champion Hurdle route but opted for chasing instead and that decision looked to be the right one when he jumped efficiently on debut at Kempton 12 days ago. Despite just beating the one rival, he made the task look effortless and this test will suit perfectly with the likes of Marracudja and Charbel in there to set a decent gallop for him to chase. Preference of those to chase the selection home is the latter who boasts strong form including his fifth in the Supreme and his chase debut which has worked out a treat with both Le Prezien and Top Notch showing a high level of form subsequently.

Verdict

Ante-post Arkle favourite ALTIOR didn't have much to beat on chase debut at Kempton last month, but it was hard not to be impressed by the manner of victory, and open to any amount of improvement, he is expected to continue his winning run up in class. Charbel is no slouch though, and the form of his chase debut success is working out well, so he has to be respected.

Fair hurdler/fairly useful chaser for D.Windrif in France, but didn't find winning easy and is pitched in quite deep on British debut.

Verdict

Graasten is an up-and-coming novice and switches to handicaps after winning a maiden hurdle from the front at Plumpton and could be on a fair mark, while any money for break returners Indietir and Consul De Thaix would be notable, particularly with regards to the former, who was Grade 1-placed in France and debuts for Dan Skelton. However, it might be worth siding with BRAIN POWER, who has some smart novice form to his name and is entitled to build on his comeback run in the Greatwood. Zubayr could also take a hand now eased in grade.

Verdict

WISHFULL DREAMING didn't meet expectations at Cheltenham in October, but it was not a performance devoid of promise, so he could be the way to go. A case can be made for several though, with the lightly-raced 4-y-o Consul de Thaix and French-recruit Indietir of particular interest.

Made good return to action in Old Roan at Aintree in October, but limitations in graded company exposed again last time and will need to find more for first-time cheekpieces if he's to go close.

Verdict

Far from a vintage renewal based on what we may have expected just a month ago, but some potential stars and legends of old line up and the pace will be as frantic as always. Sire De Grugy has won this twice in the past and returned to form in great style last time out, successfully shouldering top weight in a competitive Ascot handicap. Much debate has circulated around the Willie Mullins camp this week and his representative Un De Sceaux is likely to put up a bold show, though he has fallen on his last two reappearance efforts and drying ground is a negative. The young pretender AR MAD shaped like a hugely promising chaser last season and if carrying on from where he left off he could prove very tough to stop. He was thought of by many as the main threat to Douvan in the Arkle last season before injury struck and on his win in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices' Chase on this card 12 months ago he's a big player.

Verdict

UN DE SCEAUX suffered a couple of reversals in the spring, but there was certainly no disgrace in going down to a revitalised Sprinter Sacre and he's taken to show he's still one of the best 2 milers around on his return. Sire de Grugy looked just about as good as ever at Ascot last time and could be the one to give the Mullins raider most to do, particularly as he has such a good record here.
