Fair maiden on the Flat for John Joseph Murphy, but offered little on hurdling debut at Exeter last month, tailed off when falling at the last.

Verdict

LINGER sets a clear standard on the hurdles form he has shown to date and one of his penalties is negated by Liam McKenna's 7lb claim as he makes another trip over from Ireland. Vincent's Forever set a fair standard on the Flat for John Gosden and is of interest now switched to David Pipe's yard, while Iconic Sky is open to improvement after finishing second on her hurdling bow at Fakenham in October.

Verdict

This can go to a hurdling newcomer, with VINCENT'S FOREVER, who was fairly useful on the Flat for John Gosden, topping the list, particularly as he has the physical scope to do well in this sphere. Deauville Crystal and Regal Gait need a market check on their hurdling debuts, whilst Iconic Sky sets the standard of those with experience.

Cut little ice in Carlisle bumper on NH debut 8 months ago. Makes first start over hurdles here.

Cut little ice in Carlisle bumper on NH debut 8 months ago. Makes first start over hurdles here.

Verdict

BANDSMAN ran with plenty of promise on his hurdles debut when runner-up behind smart Flat performer Top Tug at Kempton and will improve for both the experience plus a step up in distance in a contest that has a decent roll of honour including Captain Cutter in 2013 and Duke Des Champs who took this 12 months ago. Blue Hussar may well benefit for a switch to hurdling having proven to be a consistent handicapper on the Flat at a decent level, while The Grinder could go well at a price having contested a decent Aintree bumper on his rules debut behind the very promising Cruiseaweigh.

Verdict

BANDSMAN did little wrong when beaten by a classy Flat recruit on his hurdling bow at Kempton last month, and is fancied to open his account with that experience under his belt. Hubertas wasn't given a hard time on his first start in this sphere and rates the main danger whilst Blue Hussar is worth a second look on his debut over timber.

Winner at Newcastle in March but well held since, and stiff task from 5 lb out of the handicap.

Verdict

BERTENBAR was rallying when falling at the last at Fakenham but that came over a sharp 2m so the extra three furlongs on a more galloping track should play to his strengths along with the first-time cheekpieces which could unlock further improvement. Brice Canyon is another who could benefit from the addition of cheekpieces and the 3lb drop for his effort at Warwick where he was third, while Vent Nivernais has to be respected.

Verdict

BERTENBAR was let down by his jumping on return/debut for Dan Skelton at Fakenham 16 days ago but is worth another chance with Harry Skelton taking over. Brice Canyon is potentially very well handicapped on his French form and is the obvious danger.

Winning pointer who at least matched hurdles form when runner-up over fences at Kelso (17f). Unseated at the second at Doncaster next time but remains open to progress as a chaser.

Verdict

MILLY BALOO looked to have one race too many at the back end of last season when pulled up at Hexham but this highly consistent mare should have no issue making her chase debut against rivals that all have something to prove on form. Misfits unseated early on at Doncaster last week so the quick turnaround won't be any inconvenience, while Calin Du Brizais may find improvement for the addition of cheekpieces to help him concentrate.

Verdict

Winning-pointer MISFITS was a close second over an inadequate trip on chase bow at Kelso before unshipping his rider early doors at Doncaster, and remains open to improvement as a chaser. Susie Sheep is another who's taken well to fences and rates the biggest threat.

Verdict

THE LAST BAR has proved frustrating to follow in recent weeks after failing to complete but the six-year-old is still unexposed and could be well handicapped off a mark of 110. Team Skelton do well at this venue and connections will be hoping that a drop back to 0-115 company over 2m5f does the trick. Next Edition ran well on his first start over hurdles since 2013 here last month and deserves to win again soon, while Green Zone was punted at Ayr 17 days ago but didn't perform to his true level.

Verdict

CHIC THEATRE shaped better than his final position suggests at Cheltenham last month and has been dropped a further 2 lb by the handicapper. He gets the nod in a tricky-looking handicap. Next Edition ran well on his first start over hurdles for 3 years last time and is feared most, whilst support in the market for North Country Boy on his return could be significant.

Landed a gamble from his lower chase mark at Perth in July, though undoubtedly fortunate. Creditable placed efforts over hurdles last twice but bit more required to resume winning ways.

Verdict

FLED OR PLED is yet to prove himself on ground with 'soft' in the description but this surface should be within his reach and the four-year-old can claim a second successive victory. He was well backed when winning with ease at Towcester three weeks ago and Jamie Bargary's 3lb claim helps with the inevitable rise in the weights. Solway Sam arrives on a lower weight but doesn't have the same scope for progression as the selection, while Distant Sound and Improved look best of the remainder.

Verdict

FLED OR PLED arrives on the up and is the most solid option, though strong market support for the Nicky Richards handicap newcomer Shotofwine would put a slightly different slant on things, while Benability is also fairly treated if a 7-month break has revived (gone well fresh before).
