SAMSON lost little in defeat when second over the extended 2m5f here last month and could build on that performances now dropped in trip and running off the same mark. Bring Back Charlie is 6lb higher than when striking over 2m at Uttoxeter in October but has viable place claims, while Just Spot is worth a market check on his return from a long break as he's 3lb lower than when scoring over fences on his latest outing at Towcester 611 days ago.

Verdict

SAMSON was nicely clear of the rest when bumping into an improver over 21.6f at this venue 12 days ago and though the drop in trip is a concern, this isn't a deep race and he has the same mark to work with. Bring Back Charlie is excused his latest run and rates a big danger, while Artiste du Gouet was backed as though capable of much better last time.

PRESENT MAN knuckled down well to score by a neck over 2m5f at Ascot two weeks ago and is expected to remain competitive, off 7lb higher, over this shorter trip. Wishing And Hoping could be a danger to all on the front end providing his Plumpton fall last time out hasn't knocked his confidence, while Uhlan Bute is entitled to strip fitter for his reappearance spin at Kempton (unseated rider) and improve now his normal cheekpieces are reapplied.

Verdict

PRESENT MAN had more in hand than the bare margin suggests at Ascot 2 weeks ago and remains a chaser to keep on the right side. Wishing And Hoping's opening mark looks very fair given what he showed on his chase debut at Bangor and rates the main threat despite coming to grief at Plumpton since. Uhlan Bute should have made a winning return off this mark at Kempton but isn't the most reliable.

Woodford County won this last year off the same mark and is likely to have been prepared for this contest once again. This ground might have dried up too much for him this time and a chance is taken on recent Ludlow winner VICE ET VERTU to claim successive wins. Henry Daly's charge was well backed there and a 7lb penalty back up in class shouldn't pose him too many issues. Dancing Shadow and Cyclop complete the list of likely contenders.

Verdict

CYCLOP ran a blinder in the Southern National at Fontwell and this young stayer gets the nod off the same mark, but there are plenty of possible dangers in an open race, headed by recent Ludlow scorer Vice Et Vertu, Victor Dartnall's Dancing Shadow, who promises to be suited by this trip, and last year's winner Woodford County.

CHELSEA FLYER was beaten by under a length over 2m4f at Uttoxeter last time and is expected to step up on that effort now cutting back in trip. Charlemar built on his bumper victory in France when landing a Chepstow maiden hurdle last month and has place claims now running under a penalty. The main danger to the selection, however, may be Touch Kick, a Wincanton bumper winner that is sporting a first-time hood.

Verdict

An interesting novice hurdle that can go to CHELSEA FLYER, who shaped well at Uttoxeter and can improve plenty. Penalised Chepstow winner Charlemar is open to significant progress and could well follow up, while Touch Kick catches the eye going jumping under Rules for the first time.

Coyaba appeals as being a very well-handicapped horse on his bumper form and the reputation he had when with Martin Keighley. The stable move to Richard Phillips may just sweeten him up but he is likely to improve for the outing after such a long absence so preference goes to WISTARI ROCKS, who has shown considerable improvement on his last couple of starts and looks capable of continuing his progression off a 9lb higher mark. Jump And Jump is interesting also on her handicap debut.

Verdict

WISTARI ROCKS has returned in top form, quickly landing back-to-back Uttoxeter handicaps this autumn. The handicapper has understandably taken action, but the manner of his latest victory suggests he is capable of completing the hat-trick. Annie Alainn and Carqalin are a couple of threats.

All eyes will be focussed on The New One's chasing debut as his form over hurdles is well clear of any of his rivals on paper. However, the most obvious concern is whether he has the size and scope for chasing and he is passed over in favour of the four-year-old FRODON. A Grade 2 winner already over fences, he found the BetVictor Gold Cup too hot to handle at Cheltenham but will appreciate the return to a smaller field. Rock The Kasbah shaped as though he wanted further last time so preference for the main dangers go to Barney Dwan and Sir Ivan.

Verdict

THE NEW ONE was by far the best of these over hurdles, and his trainer reports him to have schooled well, so that added with his excellent record fresh means he ticks plenty of boxes on chase debut. Barney Dwan and Frodon look the ones with experience in this sphere to focus on.

Roger Charlton has a rare runner under National Hunt rules with TAMBOUR, who is related to some decent performers and is taken to make a winning debut in what could be a decent contest. Others to consider include Paris Bound, a half-brother to Taglietelle and Group performer Side Glance, Unsafe Conduct, for the Tizzard team who are in superb form, and Amoola Gold.

Verdict

Some good Flat pedigrees on show, with TAMBOUR selected to provide his Flat-oriented yard with a rare winner in this sphere. The market will obviously provide a few clues, with Amoola Gold, Dynamite Dollars and Paris Bound having something to recommend them, while Sensible Friend has the benefit of a previous run.
